Getting back to working out after a long break? Here's some tips!

Getting back to working out after a long break can be challenging. If you have been out of the game for a while, you have likely lost some conditioning, which is totally normal. It may feel frustrating to not be able to lift the weights you used to or keep the same pace as you did before your break. I get it AND it is okay! There are some steps you can take to make the process easier and more enjoyable. Here are some tips that may make this transition easier:

Start slow and gradually increase your intensity: It is important to ease back into your workout routine and avoid pushing yourself too hard too quickly. Start with lower intensity workouts and gradually increase the intensity and duration of your workouts as your body adjusts.

Set achievable goals: I like to call this "reduce your expectations to zero” Setting realistic and achievable fitness goals will help you stay motivated and track your progress. If you get too far ahead of yourself, reaching your goals will feel frustrating and punishing. Start with small goals and work your way up to more challenging ones as you get stronger.

Find a workout buddy or hire a personal trainer: Having a workout partner or a personal trainer can help you stay accountable and motivated. You and your workout buddy do not even have to do the same things! It can just be nice to have someone you check in with and celebrate with. A trainer can also help you design a workout plan that fits your fitness level and goals.

Focus on proper form and technique: When you are starting a new workout routine, it is important to have a good foundation. While I believe that form looks different on everyone, this is a great time to work on building strong foundations and tweaking anything that isn’t working for you. Take the time to learn how to perform the movement, how it feels, and any areas that may need some help before adding more weight or intensity.

Be patient and stay curious: If you are constantly comparing yourself to the last time you were regularly working out, you may start feeling impatient with the process. It is important to remember that your body HAS changed since the last time you were exercising. Approaching movement with curiosity instead of comparison can help you feel more confident. It is okay if your goals and body changes!

Incorporate rest days into your routine: I don’t co-host a podcast called “Rest Days” for nothing!  Rest days are just as important as workout days. Give your body time to rest and recover between workouts to avoid burnout and injury.

Remember, that moving your body is supposed to be ADDING to your life. If it is causing you stress and pain, maybe you need to reevaluate what role you want fitness to play in your life. Curiosity and compassion go a long way when it comes to diving back into movement
