Efficient Exercising: A few Short & Sweet Gym Reminders

The gym can be intimidating even if you know you are going to be fine. So many of us grew up feeling like we did not deserve to take up space and the gym is definitely a place where this idea gets challenged. Showing up at peak hours with a bunch of people sweating, grunting, and potentially recording you while they record themselves can be a lot. If you are like me, you probably just want to go to the gym, kick ass, and leave. Here are some of my reminders for the gym goer who is looking to be more efficient!

⁣⁣⁣Have a plan: Having an exercise plan and knowing what muscles you want to work and what machines and weights you want to use can be such a great way to save time and stay focused. Walking in with zero plan can result in a longer workout with a bunch of moves that don’t really get you where you wanna go! Even a basic plan of the moves you are trying to do and the equipment you need can be a game changer. Do your warm-up: I do not think you will fall apart without a warm up but it is nice to get your mind and body into it . A warm-up can help you switch off from work mode and move into workout mode. This could mean setting up and taking some deep breath on your mat, doing some practice reps, or dedicating a song or two to some gentle mobility. You can get a better sense of what your body needs during the workout and help you have a smooth workout session!

Keep it simple: This is the top tier tip (TTT) that you need to know! You do not need to do a brand new workout every single day you’re in the gym!! Yes, novelty and trying new exercises can be fun. I love to try new things. Yes, you can attempt the acrobatic, combo moves you saw on tiktok. Why not? And sticking with some staple exercises is a great way to build consistency and actually get stronger⁣! Sometimes boring ol’ workout routines work the best.

Do that cool down: Same rules as the warm-up! You will not fall apart if you skip your cool down. However, it is a good way to check in with your body and see how you feel. After you exercise, your muscles are warmer and you have increased circulation. It can also be a great time to work on your mobility and breathing and potentially help with soreness.

Hydration & food: How quickly do you think your dehydrated ass muscles are going to recover? Probably not that quickly. Make sure you’re drinking plenty of water and eating adequate amounts of food to help with muscle recovery. Walking around like human jerky is not going to be pleasant and it will make staying consistent with exercise that much harder. Hydrating and fueling your body will help your muscles recover and get back to your movement practice sooner.

Making the most of your gym sessions doesn't require overcomplicating things. Having a clear plan, properly warming up and cooling down, sticking to basic but effective movements, and ensuring proper hydration and nutrition can go a long way in maximizing your workout efficiency. The gym can be intimidating but you deserve to be there. Share your thoughts and experiences to keep the conversation going! What are your tried-and-true tips for getting in productive gym sessions?
