I am sick of Fatphobic Workout Marketing

Sometimes, I just want someone to guide ME in a workout and I turn to recorded stuff online. But let me tell you, it's not all fun in games when you just try to do something like a popsugar workout and ALL OF THEM are either labeled as slimming, calorie blasting OR the intro line is "join us for this 30 minute fat torching workout to get you bikini ready" ⁣

1️⃣First of all, I can be bikini ready by throwing on a bikini ⁣

2️⃣Second, you can't promise anyone the spot reduction, societally acceptable fat loss that you're insinuating. ⁣
⁣”Toning” is a hard one for folks to wrap their minds around. It sounds pretty harmless and accurate. But I would venture to say that toning is often a covert version of slimming and shrinking. Plus, exercise wise, the idea behind toning is silly. Fitness does NOT spot reduce areas and you really can’t control HOW your muscles look on your body. It is ok if you have bulkier, shorter muscles and it is ok if you have longer, smaller muscles.

I am aware this is a marketing technique and I am in a space where I can handle the daily exposure to diet culture relatively well. But the truth is, some folks can't. People who are just exploring the idea of ditching diet culture may not be able to tolerate this. ⁣

And it's so pervasive or omnipresent that we don't even realize how often we are absorbing it until we actively decide not to. ⁣🤷🏾‍♀️

So I hope today if you're working out, you move in a way that makes you feel strong and whole. ⁣

Happy Monday, friends ✨🙌🏾⁣
